2 win in 2 nights, 1st seed in playoffs
A busy week for the Bellies with three games to finish the season and the opportunity to capture first seed with two wins of the remaining three games to play.
Tuesday July 24th – New West played a rare WLA Tuesday game at Cam Neely to face the last meeting of the year against the 4th place Maple Ridge Burrards. New West dominated the first period with a 6 goal run lead by a natural hat trick from Mitch Jones to start the period. The Jones brothers owned the first with a combined 6 points. The second saw Ridge back a comeback which was short lived as Schuss and McBride with two quick ones. 8-4 New West to start the third, Ridge got within three but that would be it as the Bellies finished with three goals and the 12-6 road win. Alexis Buque was in net for the win not unlike his last visits in eth WLA semi-finals where we won game seven in OT. Buque faced 44 shots on 38 saves for the W. New West improved to 13-3 and took the season series on Ridge
Thursday July 26th – back to Queens Park Arena for the last regular season home game of the 2018 campaign. Coach McDade going with Belanger in between the pipes for the Bellies. With the Timbermen a bit late coming from the island, the ball drop was at 7:05 and Nanaimo off to quick start 2-0 as New West struggled to get organized. Just over the half way mark of the first, New West was on the board as Brandon Goodwin on transition buried top corner on Claxton. This was followed by 4 more goals in as many minutes. New West took the 5-4 lead into the dressing room after 20. Daniel McQuade opened up the second period and New West never looked back as the owned the wooden floor and scored 6 in the second and 5 in the third to beat Nanaimo 16-5. Logan Schuss continued racking up the point with yet another 8 point night and a WLA lead of 103 total points on the season, Schuss now has a 15 point lead on Victoria’s Casey Jackson. The win secured New West with first place and the top seed heading into eth playoff run starting August 2nd at QPA.
One more regular season game as the Fish head over to Victoria for a Sunday 6PM game.
