The New Westminster Salmonbellies came out on the wrong side of a last minute buzzer beater on Thursday Night as the Maple Ridge Burrards Mike Mallory scored as the shot clock went off with 15 seconds left to give the Burrards a hard fought 9-8 Victory over the hometown Salmonbellies.
The game was chippy throughout with each team receiving a 5 minute major at one point early in the game, the Burrards started hot scoring each of the game’s first 4 goals and leading 7-2 midway through however the Bellies refused to go away going on a 5 goal run spanning the end of the 2nd and beginning of the 3rd period to tie the game at 7.
The bellies were led offensively again by Jordan McBride and Mitch Jones as each finished with 5 points (1 goal 4 assists each), While Austin Shanks and Lyndon Bunio supplied the majority of the goal scoring for the bellies as Shanks finished with a hat trick while Bunio had 2 goals, also in on the goal scoring for the bellies was Brendan Ranford with a goal and a assist, while Anthony Malcom had 2 assists and Mike Donaldson had an assist. Alexis Buque got the start in goal and turned aside 37 of 46 shots including going on a run of more than a period and a half without allowing a goal that allowed the Bellies to go on that 5-0 run to tie the game at 7 and was eventually named the games 2nd star.
Mike Messenger was the faceoff man tonight and did pretty well on those draws winning 12 of 20. Defensive standouts for the Bellies included Messenger, Brett Mydske, Curtis Hodgson, Jason Jones, Jeff Henrick, and Tony Tremblay.
The bellies would finish 2 for 3 on the night on the power play, With this loss the bellies fall to 2-1 on the season (667 win percentage) and will now go on the road to face the Langley Thunder next Wednesday June 5th game time is 7:30 PM. The Bellies next home game is the next night Thursday June 6th when the Visiting Coquitlam Adanacs will pay a visit to Queens Park arena game time is 7:30 PM
