BELLIES TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS ON THE ISLAND, 9-8 WIN OVER THE ROCK
The Salmobellies made the first trip to the island this season to face the Victoria Shamrocks at the Q Centre. After a hard fought game at home vs the T-Men this past Thursday, the Red and White were looking to bounce back string and go 3-0 to start the season.
Head Coach Rory McDade going back to game one starter Alexis Buque in net, as well a few other changes. In goes two Alberta boys Bunio who makes his WLA debut and Tyrell. While the Bellies were missing many regulars in Goodwin, Schuss, Malcom and both Belleis who are still with the Saskatchewan Rush - Mydske and Messenger. The Shamrocks turned to the Junior A ranks and called up Del Bianco from the Junior A Adanacs and Hagedorn has a minor injury from Saturdays night loss in Nanaimo.
Jason Jones opened up the scoring early on and both teams went back and forth before Vic took the lead 5-4 into the dressing room after 20. First period scoring for the Bellies: Jordan McBride with two, Jason Jones and Mitch Jones.
At the start of the second period Lydon Bunio ties it with his first ever WLA goal followed by Mitch Jones 30 second later to take back the the lead at 6-5. Victoria answered back as King scored but Jason Jones with his second of the night made it 7-6 after 40 minutes of play.
Bunio starts the period with his second of the night 1:19 of the third for the two goal lead. On the power play Wardle scores to get the Rock within one before Mitch Jones grabs the hat trick and back to a two goal lead at 15:05. Victoria got within one but some stellar defence and Buque closing the door in the pipes on many Victoria opportunities. Bellies walk away and head back to Swartz Bay with a 9-8 win and two points on the road.
Buque faces 59 shots on 51 saves and earns a well deserved first star of the game.
