The New Westminster Salmonbellies visited the Langley Thunder at the LEC Wednesday June 21st in the first game of their back-to-back match up. Bellies came up on top winning 8-7.
The first period was a defensive battle between both teams, as only three goals were scored. New West opened the scoring with Logan Schuss meeting the back of the Thunder net. Zach Herreweyers brings the Bellies up 2-0 later in the period as he scores on Davide Diruscio shorthanded. Jordan Magnuson closes out the first for Langley with a goal, making the score 2-1 Bellies after 20 minutes.
The back of the net saw more action in the second period as both teams racked up four goals. Joel McCready starts it off scoring for the Bellies bringing their lead up to 3-1. All period long, the Thunder are quick to answer back keeping the game close. Johnny Pearson beats Tye Belanger scoring the Thunder's second goal. Justin Goodwin gets the Bellies ahead by another goal, but Pearson is quick to shut down the excitement by scoring his second of the game. McCready and Mitch Jones score a pair for the Bellies getting them ahead 6-3, but the second period closes with the Thunder scoring a pair of their own, keeping the game within one.
The third period kicks off with an early goal by Brandon Clelland, tying the score for the first time since it was 0-0. Shortly after JP Kealey scores for the Thunder giving them their first lead of the game. Feeling the pressure, the Bellies score a pair of goals by Daniel McQuade and Joel McCready (McCready with the hat trick!) This was followed by a spat in front of the Bellies net, causing a roughing call toward the Thunder. The game ended with the Bellies on top 8-7.
The three stars for the game were:
1st - Joel McCready (New Westminster)
2nd - JP Kealey (Langley)
3rd - Brandon Clelland (Langley)
